Biography
New York Surfaces is owned by Christopher Capobianco, whose diverse background includes experience as an architectural sales representative, retailer, technical consultant, writer, educator and activist. A fourth generation floor covering specialist, he “grew up in the business” and spent 14 years as a retailer before launching a new career servicing the A&D community in 1992. As a manufacturer’s representative and technical consultant, he has earned a reputation as an authority on resilient floor covering products such as Cork, Vinyl and Rubber and is as comfortable discussing design as he is helping write specifications or giving advice on installation and maintenance. Now, Christopher is bringing unique high quality flooring products and other proprietary interior finishes such as wall systems, upholstery fabric and leather to the market. Christopher’s technical experience includes his current work as a columnist for four magazines; National Floor Trends, Coverings, Floor Covering Installer and the Flooring Contractor. He is a long time member of ASTM Committee F 06 on Resilient Flooring where he chairs task groups on the development of specifications for Cork Floor Tile and preparation of concrete Substrates. As an educator, Christopher has worked since 1986 to create and implement a number of training programs for installers, architects, retailers and interior designers. He is accredited by The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) as a Resilient Floor Inspector (RFI) and as an instructor for two IICRC Inspector courses. He has created and instructed American Institute of Architects Continuing Education System (AIA/CES) courses for seven different companies and is certified as an auditor of AIA/CES programs by the AIA.
